Twenties

What is it like approaching 20?

Approaching 20 is both exciting and scary. And when I say exciting, I’m not even talking about the joyful excitement. It’s the kind of excitement that scares you because you realize that you are no longer a child and that you are entering a crucial phase of your life.

My experience of approaching 20 is very emotional and difficult. It’s very different from every transition I had to go through before that.

You no longer have the security of excuses: “No I’m too young for this” or “I’m not ready yet”.

By approaching 20, you are entering a period of your life where you have to figure things out and cannot just rely on your parents, especially when you grew up in an unconventional family environment. You realize that you can’t count on anyone but God.

Entering my 20s is also a phase where I am looking for lots of answers. It’s a time where I’m searching for God and building a stronger relationship with him.

What we should do.

I truly believe that we should all be preparing ourselves before reaching this number that is 20. We shouldn’t just wait for it to hit us in the face. But preparing for your twenties is not rainbows and flowers. It’s tears, heartbreaks, instability, good moments, butterflies and so much more. It’s knowing but not knowing. That’s really how I see it. It probably doesn’t make sense to any of you but that’s the best way I could describe it.

One thing I’ll say is that: becoming an adult doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t have to. You just got to do it because time goes by and you still grow up. The worse thing you could do entering your twenties is live in denial that time will continue to go on. Get ready, go, do it, get there.

Know that nobody will push you to do the things you need to do anymore. But you now role on the principle that you do things because you need to do them not because you feel like doing them. It’s not easy but it’s worth it.

My wishes for my twenties.

What I want is to get ready, learn and get to know myself better. I want to experience new things, change routine, learn from women around me, learn from other cultures, and travel. I want to know the people I want to keep in my life and create a community of young girls like me who just want to make it in life.
